Lawrence Lee Wing of Chelsea, MA, Longtime Boston Businessman, Dies at Age 72

BOSTON — October 16, 2002 — Lawrence ("Larry") Lee Wing, of Chelsea, MA, a prominent member of Boston's banking and business community and a leader in Boston's Asian American community, died Oct. 15 suddenly at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

A Trustee of Joslin Diabetes Center since 1995, Mr. Wing was a founder of Joslin's Asian American Program and Fund, which supports research, culturally appropriate treatment and education interventions for the Asian American population, which is at-risk for developing diabetes. He was a corporator for the County Savings Bank, and formerly served on the board of directors of the Boston Five Cents Savings Bank and Citizens Bank.

Born in Chelsea, he was the son of the late Lee S. and Alice Wing. He was a graduate of Chelsea High School, had a B.A. degree from Boston University, and was an alumnus of Bentley College. He operated real estate, restaurant and industrial labor businesses in Boston for many years, and he was the owner of Wing's Restaurant in Chelsea, Work Helpers Inc. and Lee Wing Realty.

He was a former translator for the Suffolk Superior Court. He was past president of the Lee Family Association Chapter of Greater Boston and of the Lee Family Credit Union. He was a member of the Henry Price Lodge (Boston Third Masonic District), Star of Bethlehem Lodge (Third Masonic District, Chelsea), Massachusetts Freemasons (32nd Degree), the Lions Club, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and the Kiwanis Club.

"Mr. Wing was a long time Joslin supporter and active member of our Board of Trustees. He also made many contributions to the business community, particularly the Asian American business community, in Boston over the years," said C. Ronald Kahn, M.D., president of Joslin Diabetes Center. "He served on Joslin's building committee and was eager to help people with diabetes, especially Asian Americans who increasingly are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes."

Mr. Wing is survived by his wife Evelyn (Leong) Wing and their grown children, Lauren Wing of Los Angeles, CA; Linda Hom of Newton, MA, and Leverett Wing of Chelsea. Other survivors include his brothers, Dr. Richard Wing of Newton; Dr. George Wing of Brooklyn, NY; Alvin Wing of Brookline, MA; and his sister, Deanna Wong of Newton; and two grandchildren, Douglas and Jacquelyn Hom.

Calling hours will be Friday, Oct. 18, from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. at Frank A. Welsh & Sons Funeral Home, 718 Broadway, Chelsea. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Asian American Diabetes Fund at Joslin Diabetes Center and sent to Joslin Diabetes Center, Development Office, One Joslin Place, Boston, MA, 02215.
