- Joslin Diabetes Center Collaborator Awarded Medicare Chronic Care Improvement Pilot Project

[December 20, 2004] — A partnering organization of Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston, has been awarded a Chronic Care Improvement (CCI) pilot program by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Through this program Joslin will participate in a coalition that will provide disease management services to Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries in Mississippi who have complex diabetes and/or congestive heart failure.

[November 15, 2004] — Kevin E. Conley, President & CEO of Conley & Company, has been named chairman of Joslin Diabetes Center’s Board of Trustees. Conley succeeds Robert E. Patterson, Senior Partner of Cabot Properties, L.P., and Chairman of Cabot’s Investment Committee, who stepped down after nine years as Chairman, but will continue to serve as Chairman Emeritus and as a Trustee.

[November 1, 2004] — Joslin Diabetes Center announced today that Ulrich H. von Andrian, M.D., Ph.D, is the first scientist to receive the new Mary K. Iacocca Faculty Fellowship at Joslin Diabetes Center. Dr. von Andrian is a Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and Senior Investigator at the CBR Institute for Biomedical Research.
- Pilot Study Finds Wireless Guessing Game Motivates Children with Type 1 Diabetes to Improve Blood Glucose Monitoring

[October 25, 2004] — What can a guessing game played on a wireless hand-held device do for diabetes management? A lot, according to a pilot study led by researchers at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. The study was conducted in cooperation with a student at Harvard Medical School and a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
- Gene Linked to Greater Risk of Heart Disease in Type 2 Diabetes

[October 19, 2005] — New studies by an international team of scientists led by Joslin Diabetes Center have found variations in a gene that help explain why people with type 2 diabetes are at much greater risk for coronary artery disease, the leading cause of death for this group.

[October 15, 2004] — In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Joslin Diabetes Center Latino Diabetes Initiative announces the launch of its Web site, which provides comprehensive and culturally appropriate information about diabetes for Latinos in the U.S. and across the globe. Latino Americans are twice as likely to develop diabetes as Caucasians.
- Mechanism Discovered for Muscle Wasting Seen in Diabetes, AIDS and Other Diseases

[October 14, 2004] — Muscle wasting is associated with aging and a serious consequence of different diseases, including cancer and diabetes. Researchers at Joslin Diabetes Center, with the assistance of other collaborating researchers, have discovered an important biochemical pathway for muscle wasting—as well as a potential target for drug therapy. The study was published in the Oct. 15 issue of the journal Cell.
- Joslin Diabetes Center Awards 50-Year Medal to Longtime Investigator Robert G. Spiro, M.D.

[October 5, 2004] — Joslin Diabetes Center recently awarded its first 50-year medal to one of its own, Robert G. Spiro, M.D. Since 1970, Joslin Diabetes Center has awarded over 1,800 50-Year Medals to people residing in the United States who have lived for 50 years or more with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes, but this is the first time a member of the Joslin staff has received the award. At the present time there are about 800,000 Americans with this form of diabetes.
- Joslin Diabetes Center Honors Brothers Living 70-Plus Years with Type 1 Diabetes

[September 22, 2004] — Joslin Diabetes Center, the global leader in diabetes research, care and education, will recognize brothers Robert Cleveland and Gerald Cleveland with Joslin Medals for their living more than 70 years each with insulin-dependent diabetes. The award ceremony, set for Thursday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m. at The Nottingham Senior Living facility in Jamesville, NY, will honor Robert Cleveland, who has lived for more than 78 years with type 1 diabetes, and his brother Gerald Cleveland, who has lived for 72 years with the disease.

[September 1, 2004] — By the time overt symptoms of type 1 diabetes appear in an individual, destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas has already progressed significantly. However, findings by researchers at Joslin Diabetes Center and Massachusetts General Hospital, published in the Aug. 24 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, show that a powerful new imaging technology gives scientists a glimpse into the earliest stages of the inflammatory process leading to type 1 diabetes in laboratory animals.

[August 5, 2004] — The 34th annual New England Dressage Association’s Fall Festival of Dressage will be held Thursday, Sept. 16, through Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Fieldstone Farm, Route 106, Halifax, MA. Proceeds from the event will benefit Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, a world leader in diabetes care, education and research. For the first time, the show will host the Great American Insurance Group United States Dressage Federation Region 8 Championships, recognized by U.S. Equestrian Federation, the sport’s governing body.

[June 23, 2004] — Why do some people seem to develop type 1 diabetes rapidly while in others it may take years to develop? A new study by Joslin Diabetes Center researchers reveals one of the key biochemical pathways that determines whether type 1 diabetes will remain in its early stages or progress to full-blown disease, possibly explaining why some people develop type 1 diabetes more rapidly than others. The study was published earlier this month in The Journal of Experimental Medicine by a team from Joslin’s Immunology and Immunogenetics research section.

[March 15, 2004] – Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston and the Joslin Diabetes Center at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, are among the 12 medical centers and affiliates nationwide participating in a National Institutes of Health funded clinical study comparing three treatments of type 2 diabetes in children and teens. [March 10, 2004] — As reported March 9 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 129.6 million Americans, or 64 percent of the population, are overweight or obese. As obesity in America has become an epidemic over the past decade, the rate of type 2 diabetes, which is closely linked to obesity, has skyrocketed. It is estimated that 18.2 million people in the U.S. have diabetes, and over 90 percent of those have type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, the percentage of adults with diabetes increased 65 percent from 1990 to 2001.
- Possible Mechanism for Link Between Diabetes and Alzheimer’s Disease Discovered

[February 12, 2004] — For some time, researchers have known that people with diabetes have a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia than those without diabetes, but the exact cause of this link has not been known. Now, a new study by researchers in Cologne, Germany, and at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, to be published this week online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests that insulin resistance in brain cells can affect how they function, causing some of the biochemical changes typically seen in Alzheimer’s disease.
