Enrique Caballero, M.D.
Director of the Latino Diabetes Initiative
In addition to serving as Director of the Joslin Latino Diabetes Initiative, A. Enrique Caballero, M.D., is a clinical investigator, staff endocrinologist and Assistant Director of Continuing Medical Education at Joslin Diabetes Center. Dr. Caballero is also an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Caballero's research interests include type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention, endothelial dysfunction and diabetes in minority populations. He is a co-investigator of the National Diabetes Prevention Program, the LookAhead Program and the Diabetes Education Study, all sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Caballero has written for various publications on pre-diabetes and endothelial dysfunction. He is the principal investigator in studies assessing vascular abnormalities in obese Hispanic children, adolescents and young adults. He is also principal investigator in a study assessing biological, psychological, social and cultural factors influencing adherence to treatment in Latinos with diabetes.
Dr. Caballero frequently lectures in the areas of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and diabetes in minorities. Dr. Caballero graduated from the National University of Mexico Medical School where he was awarded the Gabino Barreda Medal for top student in his program. He completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in endocrinology at the National Institute of Nutrition in Mexico, and went on to complete a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology in Mexico. In addition, he completed a fellowship program in endocrinology and metabolism at the Lahey Clinic/Deaconess Hospital/Joslin Diabetes Center and the Program on Clinical Effectiveness at the Harvard School of Public Health.
Elizabeth Halprin, M.D.
Physician
Elizabeth Halprin, M.D., is a staff endocrinologist at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston and a member of the Joslin Latino Diabetes Initiative. She participates in The Pregnancy Clinic, a Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Joslin Clinic collaborative program for the care of women with diabetes in pregnancy. Additionally she holds monthly sessions at the Joseph Smith Community Health Center in Allston, Mass. for people with diabetes.
Dr. Halprin is an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Halprin graduated from the Instituto Superior de Ciencias Medicas in Havana, Cuba, where she finished with highest honors. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, Mass. and her fellowship in endocrinology, metabolism and nutrition at Boston Medical Center/Boston University. Dr. Halprin has been at Joslin Clinic since August 2000.
Richard M. Calderon, OD, FAAO
Chief, Center for Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Chief, Optometry William P. Beetham Eye Institute
Richard M. Calderon, M.D. is the Chief of the Optometry Program and clinical investigator at the William P. Beetham Eye Institute of Joslin Diabetes Center. He is also Chief of the Center for Advanced Diagnostic Imaging, a comprehensive state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging center for Joslin Clinic that also provides services to the Longwood Medical Area and other institutions and private practices. He is Associate Professor at the New England College of Optometry and Clinical Instructor at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.
Dr. Calderon’s research interests include the study of the etiology and progression of diabetic eye disease, and the early detection, treatment and future prevention of blindness resulting from diabetic retinopathy. He participates in several professional societies and is on the Executive Board of the International Society of Diagnostic Ultrasound in Ophthalmology. He is a co-investigator of numerous research studies from the National Institutes of Health, National Eye Institute and several pharmaceutical / private companies. Dr. Calderon has published in the field of diabetic retinopathy and ophthalmic ultrasound and has also lectured extensively. He is working with the Vision Laboratory at Harvard Medical School on basic eye research and visual function.
Dr. Calderon graduated from the University of New Mexico and completed his optometry training at the New England College of Optometry. In 1971 he did his externship training at Joslin Diabetes Center and in 1975 became a staff member of the William P. Beetham Eye Research and Treatment Section at Joslin Clinic.
Maria Koen, R.N., C.D.E.
Nurse Educator
Maria Koen, R.N., C.D.E. is a bilingual Diabetes Nurse Educator who has been working with the Joslin Diabetes Latino Clinic since 2002. Her interest in serving the Latino population developed from growing up in a bicultural home and spending time visiting family in Lima, Peru. Maria graduated from Boston College School of Nursing in 1999. Before arriving at Joslin, she practiced nursing in a variety of settings, most recently at the Massachusetts General Hospital on a semi-acute medical unit. She also has had prior experience in cardiac nursing. Future goals include finishing the Master’s of Science Nursing Program at Regis College. Clinical interests include cardiology and dermatology.
Roslyn Grant, M.S, R.D., L.D.N, C.D.E.
Registered Dietitian
Roslyn Grant is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. She has worked extensively in community nutrition both at home and abroad. Before joining the staff at Joslin Clinic, she was employed by the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Roslyn enjoys working with people from various backgrounds and learning about both the cultural differences and similarities that people share.
Kamil Hernandez Medical Office Coordinator
With both parents from Puerto Rico, Kamil’s first language is Spanish, but she grew up speaking both English and Spanish. She worked previously as a Certified Nurse Assistant and joined Joslin as an office coordinator to help Latinos in the community.
Rich Macedo
With both parents from Portugal, Rich’s first language is Portuguese. He studied at the Computer Education Institute in Somerville, Mass., and will take his Registered Medical Assistant Certification exam in June 2004. Rich is also studying to become a registered nurse with a minor in nutrition. He currently works at Joslin Clinic as a medical assistant handling patients intakes and appointments.
Joel Perez
With a Puerto Rican father and Castilian mother, Joel grew up speaking Spanish in the home. He has worked as a Certified Nursing and Medical Assistant for the past 20 years in various capacities in patient care and currently works at Joslin Clinic as a medical assistant, handling patient intakes and appointments. Teresa Rodriguez Jacobson, LICSW Licensed Clinical Social Worker Teresa Rodriguez is a licensed clinical social worker with the Joslin Latino Diabetes Initiative. She provides individual and group therapy and referral services to individuals, couples, and families dealing with the impact of diabetes. She will be offering a women’s support and stress management group this current year. Teresa Rodriguez has worked for over 25 years in the Boston Latino community. She is particularly interested in how illness impacts the family unit. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in clinical psychology at the University of Puerto Rico and received her Masters of Social Work (MSW) from the University of North Carolina. She has been at the Joslin since 2004.
Fernando Salcido
Originally from Veracruz, Mexico, Fernando immigrated to the United States in 2002. His background includes extensive customer service experience. Fernando has completed a course in interpretation (English-Spanish) at the University of Massachusetts/Boston and hopes to continue his translation studies in the future. Fernando works on the Latino team coordinating care for Latino Clinic patients and is the primary contact person for scheduling all Latino Clinic appointments. |
