Joslin Vision NetworkTM (JVN)
It used to be that the only way an eye doctor could check for problems at the back of your eye was to first put in drops that enlarge (dilate) the pupil.
Now with the proven retinal imaging device and clinical service developed at Joslin Diabetes Center, we can now just as accurately—and more quickly and comfortably—image your eye’s retina without drops.
The whole examination takes about 10 minutes. Because there is no need to dilate your pupils, there is no recovery time from drops. There’s no lingering irritation. You can drive yourself home.
This new way of photographing the retina, called the Joslin Vision NetworkTM (JVN), makes it more convenient and comfortable to have your annual eye exam, which is critical to preserving your vision.
The Joslin Vision Network was developed at Joslin Diabetes Center by a team of researchers and clinicians led by Lloyd M. Aiello, M.D. and Sven-Erik Bursell, Ph.D.
A digital camera takes video pictures of the back of the eye, which show up right on a screen where you can see them. The images are then sent to the Joslin Diabetes Center’s Reading and Evaluation Center for diagnosis by an eye specialist, who is trained to pick up even slight changes.
