Diabetes affects about 26 million in the US and 350 million worldwide.  The diagnosis and treatment of the disease is complicated by its diversity among population characteristics and its dependence on nutrition and exercise.

Diabetes offers a very significant market opportunity for industry not only from its sheer size but also from the need to tailor solutions to the diverse patient community.

Key areas of industry R&D and product development can include:

  • New targets and treatments for glycemic control and insulin resistance
  • New targets and treatment approaches for diabetes complications which include retinopathy, nephropathy, cardiovascular disease, and neuropathy
  • Beta cell regeneration and maturation to control and reverse disease
  • Diagnostics and imaging for detection and monitoring of diabetes and complications.
