Joslin Awards 51st 75-Year Medal

Barbara Wagler was 12 years old on Feb. 10, 1936 when her mother took her to get a Valentine’s Sundae at a local ice cream shop. That sundae sent Barbara to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Seventy-six years later, Barbara stood on stage at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston to receive her 75-Year Medal, only the 51st to ever be awarded by Joslin.

Joslin Weight Loss Program Comes to the Y

Joslin Diabetes Center is partnering with the Y of Greater Boston to offer Joslin’s first community-based weight loss program for people with type 2 diabetes at their Waltham location. The 12-week program, starting on April 24, focuses on weight loss within the frame work of improving diabetes control and is modeled after the successes of the clinic-based Why WAIT program.

An Interview with Stacey O’Donnell, a Diabetes Nurse Educator

Stacey O’Donnell, R.N., C.D.E., has been a nurse educator at Joslin Diabetes Center for the last five years. She graduated from Curry College in 1996 and spent three years in the cardio thoracic and two years in the vascular intensive care units at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital before joining the staff at Joslin. Stacey also worked summers at Camp Joslin and the Clara Barton Adventure Camp, camps for children with diabetes.

Dr. Howard Wolpert Helps Set Guidelines for CGM Use

After two-and-a-half years of conference calls, meetings, and extensive literature review, a panel of doctors, including Howard Wolpert, M.D., Director of the Insulin Pump  and Continuous Glucose Monitoring Programs at Joslin, have compiled the findings of a number of studies on real-time continuous glucose monitors (RT-CGM) into a series of guidelines recommending the proper use of the devices.
