• Joslin Diabetes Center Completes Sale of Land, Development Rights to Alexandria, National Development and Charles River:  BOSTON - November 27, 2007 - Joslin Diabetes Center announced today it has completed the sale of a prime development parcel at the intersection of Longwood and Brookline Avenues in the Longwood Medical Area (LMA) to a joint venture of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc., National Development, and Charles River Realty Investors.
• Boston's Prudential Tower Will Shine Blue for World Diabetes Day:  BOSTON – November 12, 2007 – Boston’s world-renowned Prudential Tower will join 200 monuments across the world and will light its top floors in blue in honor of World Diabetes Day on Wednesday, November 14. The lighting is part of a global effort to raise awareness of diabetes and its impact on the 246 million people worldwide with the disease. Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston Properties and the American Diabetes Association have joined the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in commemorating the first United Nations-observed World Diabetes Day. In addition, Mayor Menino officially declared November 14 as World Diabetes Day in the city of Boston and has issued a proclamation to commemorate the day.
• Joslin Researchers Uncover Potential Role of Leptin in Diabetes:  BOSTON – October 1, 2007 – A new Joslin-led study has shown that leptin, a hormone known mainly for regulating appetite control and energy metabolism, plays a major role in islet cell growth and insulin secretion. This finding opens up new avenues for studying leptin and its role in islet cell biology, which may lead to new treatments for diabetes. This study appears in the October 2007 issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation.
• "Kevin Youkilis Hits for Kids" to Support Joslin Diabetes Center:  BOSTON—September 19, 2007—Kevin Youkilis, first baseman for the Boston Red Sox, today announced the creation of Kevin Youkilis Hits for Kids, a private, nonprofit 501 (c) (3) charitable organization. Hits for Kids will raise support and awareness for community-based childrens’ charities and medical research organizations. Also today, the organization launched its website.
• U.S. Ironman Jay Hewitt Competes to Defeat Diabetes:  BOSTON – August 23, 2007– When Jay Hewitt was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 24, he chose to challenge himself by competing in one of the most challenging events in the sporting world – the Ironman Triathlon. Not only has Hewitt achieved his goal of finishing an Ironman, but he has crossed the finish line 13 times, proving to people with diabetes everywhere that diabetes has not stopped him from achieving – and surpassing – his goals.
• New Joslin Research Identifies Sirtuin Protein Instrumental in Fat Production and Metabolism:  BOSTON--August 15, 2007--A new Joslin Diabetes Center-led study has identified a protein found in fat cells that may play a major role in how fat is produced and stored, offering a new target for treatments to prevent obesity and reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes. This latest research appears in the August 2007 issue of Cell Metabolism.

• Joslin Diabetes Center Poised to Sell Land, Development Rights to National Development and Alexandria:  BOSTON – July 24, 2007 – Joslin Diabetes Center announced today it has signed a letter of intent with a joint venture of National Development and Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. (NYSE: "ARE") to purchase a prime development parcel owned by Joslin at the intersection of Longwood and Brookline Avenues in the Longwood Medical Area (LMA). The joint venture plans to build a life science building with premier research facilities.
• On Your Mark, Get Set…GO! Jay Hewitt, Ironman Triathlete, and Captain of Team Joslin, to Train Kids at Camp Joslin for Swim/Run Biathlon:  BOSTON – June 27, 2007 – Children and young adults attending Camp Joslin this summer will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train with an Ironman Triathlete. Jay Hewitt, who races internationally as an elite Ironman triathlete, a demanding sport that includes a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run, will visit Camp Joslin in Charlton, Mass., and train campers for Camp Joslin’s first-ever swim/run biathlon on Saturday, July 7, 2007. Former campers will be on hand to cheer the young biathletes as that day is also Camp Joslin’s annual Alumni Day.
• Joslin-led Study Identifies Genes Key to the Regulation of Body Weight:  BOSTON – June 26, 2007 – A new Joslin Diabetes Center-led study has further illuminated the role of genes in regulating body weight and fat distribution. Because obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, identifying genes that affect this condition holds promise for the detection of individuals at risk, as well as for potential prevention and treatment methods. The study, presented on June 25, was among almost 80 presented by Joslin scientists and clinicians at the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) 67th Annual Scientific Sessions in Chicago.
• Carl A. Haas Motorsports LLC Announces Diabetes Awareness Program With Eli Lilly and Company and Walgreens for NASCAR Busch Team:  BOSTON — June 20, 2007 — Carl A. Haas Motorsports LLC announced today that Eli Lilly and Company and Walgreens will be co-primary sponsors of the team’s NASCAR Busch Series program for rookie Kyle Krisiloff for the remainder of the 2007 season. Krisiloff, 21, will pilot the No. 14 Lilly / Walgreens Ford Fusion in what is the first cause marketing program at this level of a NASCAR-sanctioned racing series.
• Department of Health and Medical Services and Emaar Healthcare Group Join Hands with Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians:  Dubai, UAE — June 10, 2007 — The Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS), the leading medical service provider in the region, and Emaar Healthcare Group (EHG), the wholly owned subsidiary of Emaar Properties, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians, two prestigious global healthcare institutions, to work together for setting up an advanced Diabetes Center in Dubai.
• Red Sox Slugger Wily Mo Peña’s MoPeace Foundation and Joslin Diabetes Center Take a Swing at Tackling Type 2 Diabetes within Latino Population:  BOSTON – May 29, 2007 – Boston Red Sox Wily Mo Peña and his MoPeace Foundation are teaming up with Joslin Diabetes Center’s Latino Diabetes Initiative for the Beisbol y Salud Latino Diabetes and Health Festival to educate Latino men, women and children about type 2 diabetes.
• Massachusetts Residents May Participate in a Research Study To See if the Aspirin Family of Drugs Can Improve Type 2 Diabetes Management:  BOSTON — May 7, 2007 — Are you one of the estimated 360,000 people with type 2 diabetes in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts? If so, you may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial at Joslin Diabetes Center investigating whether salsalate, an anti-inflammatory drug used for years to manage arthritis pain, can reduce blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
• National Joslin-Led Study Shows Tight Blood Glucose Control in People with Type 1 Diabetes Does Not Impact Cognitive Ability:  BOSTON - May 2, 2007 - A study led by researchers at Joslin Diabetes Center provides good news for patients with type 1 diabetes who want to maintain tight blood glucose control and thus significantly reduce their risk of developing the devastating complications of the disease—heart disease, kidney failure, eye disease and blindness, and nerve damage.
• Ironman Jay Hewitt Brings High Hopes to Team Joslin for Marathon:  BOSTON — April 10, 2007— Running a marathon takes skill, dedication and tremendous athleticism. Just ask Ironman Triathlete Jay Hewitt, who is leading Team Joslin through the 26.2 mile course during this year's Boston Marathon. • Joslin Diabetes Center-led Study Indicates Insulin Receptors Play a Critical Role in Promoting Islet Growth to Overcome Insulin Resistance:  BOSTON – April 2, 2007 – A new Joslin-led study has identified the insulin receptor as an important protein that promotes islet cell growth in mice whose bodies are unable to use insulin properly, or are insulin resistant, a precursor to type 2 diabetes.
• Joslin Diabetes Center Reminds People with Diabetes to Schedule Annual Eye Exams to Preserve Vision:  BOSTON – March 23, 2007 – Did you know that diabetes is the number one cause of preventable vision loss and blindness? Did you also know that an annual eye exam can lead to early detection of diabetic retinopathy and other eye disease, a frequent complication of diabetes?
• Joslin Researchers Discover a Surprising Culprit in the Search for Causes of Diabetic Birth Defects:  BOSTON – March 5, 2007 – Over the past several years, Joslin Investigator Mary R. Loeken, Ph.D., and her colleagues at Joslin Diabetes Center have unlocked several mysteries behind what puts women with diabetes more at risk of having a child with birth defects. Even though those risks have decreased significantly over the years, thanks in part to advancements at Joslin, women with diabetes still are two to five times more likely than the general population to have a baby with birth defects, especially of the heart and spinal cord, organs that form within the first few weeks of pregnancy.
• New Joslin Study Reveals How a Specific Fat Type Can Protect Against Weight Gain and Diabetes:  BOSTON – March 1, 2007 – A new study from Joslin Diabetes Center may shed light on why some people can eat excessive amounts of food and not gain weight or develop type 2 diabetes, while others are more likely to develop obesity and this most common form of diabetes on any diet. The study, which used two strains of mice with differing tendencies to gain weight and develop diabetes on a high-fat diet, identified genetic and cellular mechanisms that may prevent certain mice on a calorie-dense diet from gaining weight and developing metabolic syndrome.
• Joslin Study Finds Increased Use of Insulin Pumps, New Insulin Types Give Teens More Tools to Better Manage Diabetes:  BOSTON — Feb. 27, 2007 — It is widely recognized that the teenage years are often a challenging time for youth with diabetes to maintain good blood glucose control. Hormonal changes, peer pressure, food temptations, and resistance to following good health practices are among the factors that make it difficult for many youngsters. Unfortunately, poor diabetes control places youth at increased risk of developing complications from diabetes later in life.
• George L. King, M.D., Director of Research at Joslin Diabetes Center, To Serve on Massachusetts’ New Asian American Commission :  BOSTON – February 20, 2007 – George L. • Joslin Researchers Discover Protein that Causes Blood Vessel Leakage in Eyes with Diabetic Retinopathy:  BOSTON — January 29, 2007 — Although health professionals have had success in treating diabetic retinopathy, two forms of the disease — proliferative diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema — still are the leading causes of vision loss and blindness among working age adults in the developed world. Now a Joslin Diabetes Center-led team of investigators has compiled the most complete inventory yet available of the proteins present in a part of the human eye known as the vitreous and has identified a group of proteins that may play critical roles in causing blood vessel leakage in the eyes of people with this common form of diabetic eye disease.
• New Joslin-led Study Uncovers Role of Appetite-Related Melanin Concentrating Hormone (MCH) in the Brain to Beta Cell Growth and Insulin Secretion:  BOSTON — January 25, 2007 — A new Joslin Diabetes Center-led study shows conclusively that a neuropeptide, melanin concentrating hormone (MCH), found in the brain and known for its role in increasing appetite in people, plays a role in the growth of insulin-producing beta cells and the secretion of insulin. This finding has the potential to spur the development of new treatments for diabetes that stimulate the production of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This latest research, conducted with researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and other institutions, will appear in the February 2007 issue of Diabetes.
• Joslin Names Ranch C. Kimball, Former Romney Chief Economic Advisor and Distinguished Business Leader, as Seventh President:  BOSTON — January 19, 2007 — Ranch C. Kimball, a distinguished leader in business who served as Secretary of Economic Development for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts under former Governor Mitt Romney, has been appointed the chief executive officer and seventh president of the world-renowned Joslin Diabetes Center. Kevin E. Conley, Chair of the Joslin Diabetes Center Board of Trustees, announced the appointment, following the Board’s unanimous approval. Kimball will assume the post effective February 1, 2007.
• Red Sox Slugger Wily Mo Peña On Base for Joslin Diabetes Center:  BOSTON – January 17, 2007 – Boston Red Sox Wily Mo Peña is teaming up with Joslin Diabetes Center's Latino Diabetes Initiative for the Beisbol y Salud Diabetes Awareness Project. Peña will host this program in the Dominican Republic on Jan. 20-21 and in Boston this spring to raise diabetes awareness in the Latino population.
• Joslin Diabetes Center Launches National Clinical Trial To Explore If Anti-Inflammatory Drug Can Improve Glucose Control in Type 2 Diabetes:  BOSTON — January 16, 2007 — Joslin Diabetes Center scientists are taking their groundbreaking research on the role of inflammation in type 2 diabetes to a new level this month with the launch of a national clinical trial to investigate whether salsalate, an anti-inflammatory drug used for years to manage arthritis pain, can reduce blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes. If successful, the trial could lead one day to an inexpensive way to treat this most common form of diabetes, which has been increasing at epidemic rates in recent years.
