Statement from Joslin Diabetes Center Regarding Nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to Supreme Court

BOSTON – May 27, 2009 – The Joslin Diabetes Center is pleased that the Obama Administration has appointed a person with type 1 diabetes for nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States.

As a person living with type 1 diabetes, Judge Sonia Sotomayor reinforces that diabetes should not be viewed as a disadvantage or hindrance.

“The nomination of Sonia Sotomayor exemplifies the opportunities for all youth diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, particularly with today's modern therapies.  Judge Sotomayor demonstrates that diabetes never deterred her from achieving her life's aspirations, starting with an outstanding education and stellar career and now possibly culminating with a seat on the Supreme Court,” said Lori Laffel, M.D., Chief of the Pediatric, Adolescent and Young Adult Section at Joslin Diabetes Center.  “All youths living with type 1 diabetes today can be equally inspired to follow their dreams whether it be in the classroom, on the playing field or in the board room.”
